'If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water’, Loren Eiseley,  Anthropologist-philosopher

It is the abundance and diversity of life under the sea from a tiny barnacle that clings to a rock against a raging sea to the vast majestic beauty and fragility of a coral reef that has inspired jeweller Jasmine Bowden’s inaugural collection – ‘Reef’.

Part of Birmingham’s prestigious School of Jewellery’s alumni and a graduate from Falmouth University, Jasmine’s passion is fuelled by the wild beauty of the West Country’s coastal surroundings.

From her Cornish workshop come totally free hand cut and shaped silver coral cuffs, burnished anemone pendants, exquisite barnacle cluster rings and painstakingly handcrafted pebble bangles. Each and every contemporary piece is individually made by Jasmine herself with the utmost care and attention to detail. Fascinated by repeated forms on a macro and micro scale and sources of imperfect regularity within nature Jasmine’s hope is that each piece will become as timeless as the ocean itself and will be loved and cherished yet also seen as durable wearable artworks.

Says Jasmine: “I like to think of the collection as an important reminder that everything is interconnected; humans and nature are part of the same unit. Essentially I hope my work will act as a reminder of the beauty and magnificence of nature as well as being something really special to wear.”

Her collection aside Jasmine also relishes the challenge of bespoke commissions working intimately with clients to create something deeply individual and personal. Recent projects include a three stone diamond engagement ring and a platinum wedding and eternity ring created totally from scratch in collaboration with her clients. ‘It’s a great challenge to translate an idea from someone’s head into a thing of beauty hewn in precious metals,’ says Jasmine. ‘I normally start with a discussion to decipher what my client is looking for, this is then translated into a sketch; on occasion a prototype and then of course I can relish handcrafting the final product… I enjoy suggesting ways for the client to add a touch of individuality to their piece by for instance adding a secret engraving or initial’.
